Tips for Collectors: Working with a Conservator

A conservator is ethically bound to use safe and reversible treatments that will retain the original integrity of the work and restore the artist's intended vision

The price of treatment should always be based on time and materials, never on the value of the item

A conservator cannot ethically determine the value of the work, or the loss of value that may accompany any damage that may occur. This can only be determined by an appraiser. A list of appraisers certified by the American Society of Appraisers is available at www.appraisers.org.

A listing of conservators who abide by the code of ethics established by the American Institute for Conservation is available at their website.
